The 2005 Lagrein Berger Gei is one of the best versions of this wine I can remember tasting. Today it comes across as very youthful and primary, but this finessed, seamless beauty is loaded with blueberries, blackberries, smoke, tar and licorice. It just needs some time in bottle for the rest of its aromas and flavors to develop. The oak also appears especially well integrated in this vintage. It is an awesome effort from Ignaz Niedrist. Anticipated maturity: 2007- 2015.
Ignaz Niedrist is a small producer based outside of Bolzano. Niedrist makes one my favorite Lagreins, the Berger Gei, which in most vintages is a special wine well worth seeking out.
