Sandro Chia, the owner of this estate, is one of Italy’s major post-war painters – his sizeable murals, for those who are interested, can be seen in Manhattan’s well known Palio restaurant. The vineyards are high in altitude, something which is felt in the 1999 Brunello di Montalcino, fragrant with wafting cherry and plum fruit, medium-bodied but of good softness, already approachable and with tannins of some finesse on the close. Drink: 2005-2013.
