The 2005 Tempranillo Reserva is sourced from vines in excess of sixty-years of age and is matured in new French oak for 18 months. It has a rather broody, charred bouquet that is well-defined, but missing a little charm. The palate is full-bodied with chewy, sinewy tannins and dense black, licorice-tinged fruit on the tannic finish. This needs another 2-3 years bottle age mellow. Drink 2014-2019.
Until 1995, Amaren was the premium range belonging to Bodegas Luis Canas, and it is now overseen by winemaker Fidel Fernandez Gomez. Half the vines in his vineyards are over the age of sixty years.
