The 2005 Pommard Les Epenots Vieilles Vignes – representing a single barrel – displays lightly-cooked yet juicy cherry fruit marked by strikingly vivid notes of fruit pits and chalk. The toastiness of the barrel is not entirely integrated. Richly concentrated black fruit, fruit pit bitterness, and low-toned chocolate and chalk inform a long sappy, bitter-sweet length. Hamster-like in its fat, this should be given a chance to hibernate for a dozen or more years, I suspect, even though its overt richness and flamboyant oak will appeal to some tasters in the wine’s youth.
