The 2008 Babiana is a blend of 50% Chenin Blanc, 27% Viognier and 17% Chardonnay and the remainder Grenache Blanc, raised entirely in oak of which one-third is new (French and Hungarian.) The nose displays good definition with fine leesy aromas. The palate is harmonious and quite oaky, but there is good weight in the mouth and the finish displays attractive vanilla and almond notes. Drink now-2014. Vondeling is a Paarl-based production established in 2001, although the oldest vines are actually 27-years old. Their 45-hectares of vines hone in on classic French grape varieties, and these were augmented three years ago upon the acquisition of a neighbour’s plot that included Petit Verdot and Pinotage. No US importer.
