Tasted at the Domaine Engel tasting in London, the 1983 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru was tasted from magnum and stands as one of the finest Burgundy wines that I have tasted from a vintage that is not fondly remembered. It has a winsome, autumnal bouquet with red fruit, leather, dried fig, sage and damp earth--wonderful definition and focus. The palate is beautifully balanced with fine structure, touches of spice box and dried leaves, superb depth and a very long, sustained finish. This is a fantastic Clos Vougeot within the context of the vintage, sophisticated and harmonious, effortless even. It is drinking beautifully now and well preserved bottles should continue to offer immense drinking pleasure. Tasted October 2016.
