The 2001 Sangiovese di Romagna Riserva Avi produced by this admirable therapeutic community, which does extraordinary work in assisting those with drug and alcohol problems, has to be one of the finest examples of Sangiovese ever produced outside of Tuscany (and not that many in Tuscany itself are more impressive). Very potent and weighty on the nose, the red currant and raspberry fruit, the additional complexity supplied by the notes of licorice and toasted oak, the exceptional richness, balance, and class of the texture have to be tasted to be believed. Spicy and sweet, with a full blast of oak on the nose. Palate flavors of vanilla, boysenberry, cinnamon and cola work well as a team, while the textured finish offers leather, pepper and some wayward oak.
