Deep and concentrated, the 2005 Mercurey 1er Cru Clos de Champs Martin Cuvée Carline unwinds in the glass with notes of sweet berries, cassis, loamy soil, warm spices and orange rind. Medium to full-bodied, layered and firmly structured, like many 2005s, this wine is still quite tightly wound, with imposing reserves of fruit framed by a chassis of rich, powdery tannin. It's excellent, but still several years from true maturity.
