The 1999 Mercurey 1er Cru Clos de Champs Martin Cuvée Carline is brilliant, delivering aromas of plums, wild berries, grilled squab, licorice, sweet spices and espresso roast. Medium to full-bodied, layered and charming, it's seamless and complete, concluding with a long, sapid finish. This is a wine that really blossoms over the course of several hours. Lorenzon recalls that he cropped at around 35 hectoliters per hectare in 1999, far below the appellation average, and that he began picking before the "ban de vendanges."
