Part of a series of older wines that Chapoutier has recently purchased to bottle (in this instance, in 2009) under his label from growers with whom he collaborates, a 1994 Banyuls - representing a single 1,000+ bottle lot - offers a luxurious and enticing sense of chocolate richness along with black and red raspberry preserves and a salinity that sets off the wine's sweetness while loosening the salivary glands. There is impressive sheer juiciness here that helps make for a downright exhilarating finish. Given how well this held up prior to bottling, I hesitate to handicap its future evolution, but feel pretty confident that it will be worth savoring over at least the coming decade.
