This wine, called Joseph, is a Cabernet Sauvignon (90%) and Merlot (10%) blend. It is made by Joseph Grilli, who produces it in the Amarone method, leaving the grapes to raisin before fermentation is commenced. However, unlike Amarone, there is no raisiny, pruny characteristics to this wine, which is made in limited quantities of 500-700 cases. The spectacular, opaque purple-colored 1996 Joseph is an individualistic expression of Cabernet Sauvignon. With no oxidation, this powerful, rich, full-bodied wine (14.5% alcohol) is oozing with extract, has a thick, unctuously-textured mid-palate, and a 45-second finish. The wine is low in acidity and hugely concentrated, with Cabernet's tell-tale black currant fruit intermixed with tobacco, earth, and spice. Drink it over the next 10-20 years.
