Altare makes some of the most interesting Piedmontese wines from Nebbiolo. The 1989 Vigna-Arborina-Nebbiolo, aged in small oak casks, was made in extremely limited quantities. It reveals an intense opaque ruby/purple color, a big, oaky, intensely fruity nose, great richness, and a full-bodied, luscious, opulent finish. The moderate tannin levels are nearly concealed by the wealth of fruit. The finish lasts for over a minute. This gorgeous, voluptuous wine can be drunk now or held for up to a decade.
