The 1997 Barolo Vigneta Cannubi is approachable, although it ideally needs 2-3 more years of cellaring. Notes of camphor intermingle with ripe berry fruit, earth, soy, tobacco, and leather in this full-bodied, powerful, traditionally made Barolo. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2020. Cannubi is one of Barolo’s most prestigious properties, but in this case the fruit is handled only so well. Heavy oak, which carries a hickory scent and flavor, is the mask of Zorro.
