The dark ruby/purple-colored 1989 Hermitage's sweet smell of cassis fruit, combined with licorice and a roasted character, makes a considerable impact on the taster. In the mouth, there is explosive richness of fruit, great concentration and length, as well as a soft, voluptuous finish. The tannins are elevated, but they are ripe and round as opposed to green and astringent. As with the 1990, I suspect this wine will mature quickly yet last for 10-15 more years. Last tasted 9/94.
