The 2000 Barolo Pajana needs to be drunk within the next few years. The aromas are already quite forward, while the fruit has begun to drop out, exposing tannins that are accentuated by copious French oak. Several bottles were all at similar points in their development. It looks like the hot vintage did not favor this south-facing site in Monforte. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2014. Domenico Clerico’s 2000s have not fared as well as I had hoped. Curiously, wines from my cellar were fresher than bottles I tasted in Italy.

Loads of new wood showing on the nose right now, but there is beautiful ripe fruit underneath. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a long finish. Slightly too much wood right now, but should come around nicely. Tasted twice, once after it had been open for 24 hours, which was much better. Needs loads of bottle age.
