The 2006 Barolo Le Coste is a sturdy, firm Barolo that impresses for its clarity and nuance. Dark fruit, menthol, spices and minerals emerge from the glass with tons of complexity, acidity and structure. Despite the wine’s weight, there is a level of precision here I find incredibly appealing. This may very well be the most promising Le Coste Grimaldi has ever made. It is without question a gorgeous glass of Barolo. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2026.
Ferruccio Grimaldi is another of Piedmont’s up and coming producers. Each year the wines show greater focus as Grimaldi continues to fine-tune his approach. Grimaldi’s entry-level 2006 Barolo, from a rented parcel in Via Nuova, was still in barrel, and I was unable to taste it for this article.
