The 1999 Brunello di Montalcino is the best in years, fresh in color, intense, spicy, and penetrating in aroma, if a bit herbaceous, forceful and dense, and slightly backward in texture. The tannins are a bit dry on the close, but there is some potential for improvement with time. Poggio Salvi has now added “Villa” to its name, but the drinking public will probably be more interested in the fact that the wines, made under the supervision of Jacopo Biondi Santi, appear to be on the up-swing in terms of quality. Drink: 2006-2016.
