The top of the range is the 2011 Les Tallades de Cal Nicolau, a varietal red of the rare Picapoll Tinto from 0.2 hectares planted with ungrafted vines in 1870 -so pre-phylloxera. The grapes fermented with indigenous yeasts in 500-liter oak barrels and the wine matured in well-seasoned barriques for one year. There are the classic berries here, but also some pit fruit, sweet spices and a floral touch in a complete and reverent nose. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins showing some character, elegant and rustic at the same time. It feels a little riper than the superb 2010 vintage. A red of character. Only 652 bottles were produced. I need to go to see this vineyard one of these days...
