I was fortunate to taste the 1989 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes, which was the first vintage this cuvée was produced. Undestemmed (unlike current vintages, which are partially destemmed) and made from 90% to 95% Grenache, it's bricking in hue and shows some wild animal and leather notes, but in the mouth, it's remarkably full-bodied, silky and fresh, with a long finish that still delivers plummy fruit.
