Altare makes some of the most interesting Piedmontese wines from Nebbiolo and Barbera. The 1989 Nebbiolo Delle Langhe is marked by more noticeable new oak. With its sweet, vanillin, spicy, black-fruit-scented nose, and long, deep, full-bodied, black-cherry flavors, it makes for a succulent, gorgeous mouthful of wine. What is so admirable about Altare's winemaking is the purity, richness, and overall balance he manages to obtain. Furthermore, he has that rare talent of producing wines that are drinkable young, yet give every indication of lasting for extended periods when well-cellared.
