This is usually the most flamboyant wine of Beaujolais. Not surprisingly, in a year such as 1991, which was actually hotter and drier than 1989, Descombes was easily able to achieve the tell-tale, exotic, opulent characteristics that dominate his wines. The nose reveals an almost overwhelming bouquet of sweet cassis fruit. In the mouth, there is exceptional ripeness, richness, and layer upon layer of explosively rich raspberry fruit intermingled with flavors of tropical fruits such as mangoes. The finish is long, luscious, alcoholic, and attention grabbing. This is a full throttle, in-your-face, dramatic, yet oh so delicious Beaujolais that is impossible to resist. Drink it over the next several years.Importers: William Deutsch & Sons, Chappaqua, NY and Wine Sellers, Skokie, IL.
