The 1988 Rioja Reserva is another astonishing wine for the price. The huge, sweet, smoky, toasty-scented nose is intermingled with scents of jammy red and black fruits. The wine hits the palate with a gush of fruit, has a layered, multi-dimensional personality, medium to full body, and no hard edges. It is an opulent, lusty Rioja that should drink well for 3-4 years, possibly longer. This is a wine to buy by the case.
This is an awesome bargain from Spain (no surprise there). Most Riojas have become relatively expensive, but this bottling from Bodegas Montecillo offers amazing amounts of character, fruit, complexity, and richness for bargain-basement prices.
