Crafted from 53- and 56-year-old vines, the dark ruby-colored 1997 Mazis-Chambertin exhibits sweet black fruits, Asian spices, and hints of saddle leather in its austere and brooding aromatics. This full-bodied, broad-shouldered, muscular wine has flavors reminiscent of soy sauce, hoisin, earth, leather, and cassis liqueur. At present somewhat foursquare, this wine will require patience. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2012.
