The problem with many 1979s is that the grapes never fully ripened, resulting in too many wines with a monolithic, one-dimensional personality. The 1979 Meyney is a good, solid, muscular, fully mature wine that offers little more than simple black fruits and damp earth aromas in its nose. A compact, solid, but uninspiring finish tells the story of this cool year. Drink it over the next 3-5 years. Last tasted, 2/93.
