The interesting and complex 1994 Clos de L'Obac is produced from old vine Grenache grown on steep terraced vineyards and blended with young vine Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The wine boasts an impressive dark ruby/purple color, a pure black-raspberry-scented nose intertwined with aromas of slate and new oak. The attack offers ripe, sweet fruit buttressed by tannin and an underlying mineral component. Rich but very young, this full-bodied wine is more like a barrel sample than a bottled wine. Give it 2-3 years of cellaring and drink it over the following 10-15. This well-made wine from one of Spain's most exciting viticultural areas, Priorato, is worth a search of the marketplace.
