A bigger, richer wine than the 2008, the 2009 Syrah Melville Vineyard is another seriously impressive Syrah from the Sta. Rita Hills that has everything you could want from a red. Offering classic notes of black cherries, roasted herbs, caramelized meats and licorice, it has full-bodied richness, a big, stacked mid-palate, and sweet tannin that emerge on the finish. It's not quite as refined as the 2008, but it gains depth and richness with time in the glass and is a killer Syrah to drink anytime over the coming decade or more.

The 2009 Syrah Melville comes across as quite a bit more layered and understated than the Verna’s with less opulence but a touch more class. Sweet mint, tar, licorice and menthol add complexity to the highly expressive black fruit in this gorgeous, polished Syrah. It is a striking, captivating wine from start to finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019. Chad Melville manages the vineyards for his family’s Melville estate and makes the Samsara wines in a small rented facility in Lompoc. The wines are fermented with indigenous yeasts, aged in French oak (0-25% new) and bottled with no fining or filtration. The 2009 saw a fairly high percentage of whole clusters ranging from 50-100%. These are gorgeous, pure wines from an inspired, young producer whose career will be fascinating to follow.
