A true tour de force is the 2008 Syrah Melville Vineyard, which is a spitting image of a top C?te R?tie. Offering up gorgeous amounts of black (and slightly blue) fruits, with tons of violets, olives and peppered meat, this beauty is full-bodied, impeccably balanced and silky, with a terrific mid-palate and fine, polished tannin providing plenty of focus and cut on the palate. It has bright acidity, yet it's perfectly interwoven into the wine and it has another 15-20 years of overall longevity. Bravo!

The real blockbuster is the 2008 Syrah Melville Vineyard, a California version of a French Cote Rotie. The small amount of Viognier included in the blend has resulted in an exotic floral character intermixed with notes of Allspice, black raspberries, black currants, and bacon fat. The incredibly complex aromatics are followed by a full-bodied, opulent, voluptuously textured wine with silky tannins as well as abundant character and personality. Drink it over the next 7-8 years.
