The 2005 Pinot Noir “Griffin’s Cuvee” is a barrel selection made by the winery to emphasize the muscular side of Pinot Noir. It offers an attractive perfume of smoke, cola, black cherry, and blackberry. This leads to a wine with a solid core of dark-inflected fruit, elevated acidity, and a significant dose of tannin. The finish has plenty of fruit but there is also some gritty tannin lurking underneath. I would also opt for drinking this Pinot near-term while the fruit holds. The 2005 Pinot Noir “Cuvee Noir” offers a nose of toasty, charred oak, violets, cassis, and raspberry. This is followed by a medium-bodied wine made in a racy style with some sweet red fruits, uplifting acidity, and just enough structure. However, this wine is all on the surface. Velvety, with nubby tannins around a nice core of plum and spice flavors, finishing with more spice than fruit and tailing off just a bit. Best from 2010 through 2014. 117 cases made. -HS
