The 2003 Ricolma (100% Merlot) is packed with heady notes of super-ripe blackberries, blueberries, minerals, menthol, smoke and licorice. Made in a more opulent, concentrated style than the 2004, it shows great length and a beautiful, pure finish. The suppleness of the fruit works to balance the wine’s tannic structure, and in 2003 I have a slight preference for the Ricolma over the Percarlo although that is a very fine distinction at this level. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2019.
