The 2011 Barolo Bricco Ambrogio is showing very nicely. The vintage warmth has added to the plushness, richness and darkness of the wine. In terms of aromas, the bouquet veers towards balsam notes with grilled rosemary and medicinal herb that make bright, fleeting appearances. But it also reveals generous tones of dark blackberry fruit. The wine reaches a good place of balance and never feels over the top.

All the components are in the right place in this cherry- and strawberry-flavored red, which needs time to integrate. Vivid acidity boosts the present yet refined tannins, and the finish cruises on with an aftertaste of mineral and tobacco.
