Russo’s 2007 Barbicone is predominantly Sangiovese with a dash of Ciliegiolo, Colorino, Canaiolo and Giacomino. Sweet candied cherries, underbrush, tobacco and anise are some of the nuances that emerge from this bold, racy red. The warmth of Suvereto and the vintage has resulted in an unusually plump, juicy Sangiovese-based wine. This shows superb richness and depth in a mid-weight, yet generous style. The wilder side of Sangiovese makes an appearance from time to time, but not enough to detract from the wine’s considerable appeal. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2013.
