There is just one barrel of the 2013 Montrachet Grand Cru: a second-fill barrel rather than new. It has a complex bouquet of brioche, walnut, vanilla and lime that is beautifully delineated and very intense. The palate is smooth and refined, the acidity very well judged, but not as sharp or as racy as the Chevalier-Montrachet. This has plenty of rondeur and a flattering mineral-rich finish that has precision and persistence. But you know what…the Chevalier-Montrachet could turn out to be even better.
