Two of Coppo's current releases did not impress me - the 1995 Barbera d'Asti L'Avocata and the 1994 Mondaccione, a curiosity made from 100% Freisa. However, two other wines were good, especially in view of the fact they are from the 1994 and 1995 vintages, both problematic years for Piedmont. I enjoyed the forward, sweet cherry-scented 1994 Pomorosso. It is a 100% Barbera aged in small barriques, of which 80% are new. The wine possesses a deep ruby color, a seductive, vanillin, and black-cherry-scented nose, lush, round, deep flavors that exhibit excellent concentration, well-integrated acidity and wood, and a clean, succulent, lusty finish. Drink it over the next 2-4 years.A Leonardo Lo Cascio Selection, Winebow, Hohokus, NJ; tel. (201) 445-0620
