Savory and very complex nose with blood oranges, plums and a touch of clove and lots of minerals. Tight and fine-grained on the palate with medium to full body and a compact, structured finish. Drink from 2027.

Raspberries and strawberries with fresh lavender on the nose. Full-bodied and chewy with plenty of linear tannins. It’s structured and powerful. Needs at least six or seven years to soften. Try after 2028.

Sarmassa is a lower elevation basin-shaped vineyard with more compact soils. It lies west of Cannubi and before Fossati. The wines tend to be a bit more structured and dense as a result. This estate has 50-year-old vines at 240 meters in elevation on the flank of the basin. The Virna 2019 Barolo Sarmassa is quite elegant and perhaps a little more accessible compared to the Cannubi. However, this wine shows great balance and offers silky, integrated tannins with solid firmness to pull it all together. Only 3,000 bottles were made.

The Virna 2018 Barolo Sarmassa sources its fruit from a fully south-facing site planted to 50-year-old vines. The wine offers a twofold delivery of both power and grace. The fruit is finely nuanced with forest berry and wild plum, but there are chalky mineral sensations with plenty of blue flower and fragrant tea leaf. The tannins give firm support. Only 3,000 bottles were released.

With fruit from the heart of the Barolo appellation, the Virna 2017 Barolo Sarmassa (with only 3,000 bottles made) opens to a silky, lean appearance and plenty of rich intensity. The bouquet delivers a very clear and precise cassis tone, with softer cherry and blackberry at the edges. This structured wine offers more volume and depth than most wines made in the village of Barolo, and this is one of the special attributes of the Sarmassa vineyard. I would recommend aging this wine a little longer than the others.
