One of the few sub-$20 Malbecs I've found worth writing about, the 2017 Voodoo Moon Malbec has an extroverted nose of violets and purple berries. It's medium to full-bodied, juicy and fresh, with bold fruit flavors that carry through a gently tannic finish. No, it's not the most complex offering, but it offers a lot to like over the next few years.

The savory fresh earth notes are thick, bundled with blackberry and black cherry flavors. Spice, toasted herb and tobacco details linger on the finish, with firming tannins. Graham crackers and grape jelly. Sounds like snack time at my house growing up, not something I want in my wine. Unfortunately, the 2014 Voodoo Moon Malbec smells a bit too much like my 40-year-old memories. It's fruity and medium-bodied on the palate, finishing with some of Malbec's trademark acids and tannins.
