The 2006 Stielle comes across as bold and racy, with expressive dark fruit, leather, spices and licorice. All of the aromas and flavors build towards the intense, round finish. The estate’s 2005 Stielle is seriously beautiful in this vintage. Sweet dark cherries, flowers, licorice and herbs come together seamlessly in this rich, textured red. This level of depth and concentration was not at all easy to achieve in 2005. I am quite taken with the wine’s soft, utterly engaging personality. The round, generous finish leaves a lasting impression for its polish, detail and purity. This is a fabulous effort. Stielle is a blend of 70% Sangiovese and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in French oak. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025. This is a flat-out great set of wines from Rocca di Castagnoli. The estate releases its wines a year or more later than most, so these are current vintages in the market. The 2004 Stielle is rounder, sweeter and more harmonious than the Buriano. This supremely polished, elegant wine flows onto the palate with beautifully ripe dark fruit supported by sweet, silky tannins. With time in the glass the wine's beguiling inner perfume begins to appear, and everything is clearly in the right place. The estate’s 2003 Stielle (70% Sangiovese, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon) reveals more distinct notes of over-ripeness in its candied red fruits, with pretty notes of tobacco and worn-in leather that develop in the glass. The Sangiovese gives the wine a more slender and taut personality relative to the Buriano, but the wine nevertheless offers plenty of potential. It does seem to have suffered more under the heat of the vintage, though, and today it comes across as more advanced than the Buriano. The 2001 Stielle, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, is notably dark in color, tarry, smoky, and with rich notes of rosemary and graphite on the nose.
