Fermented in stainless-steel and raised in 65% French oak for 8 months, the 2008 Chardonnay has obvious tropical fruits on the nose that are clean and well-defined. The palate is simple but vibrant with fresh pineapple, mango and vanilla. This is decent commercial South African Chardonnay but rather ephemeral. Drink now-2013. Mulderbosch is one of Stellenbosch's most famous names. Founded in 1989 by physician Larry Jacobs who resurrected an old fruit farm, the 48-hectare estate (26-hectares under vine) soon became renowned for their Sauvignon Blanc. Young Mike Dubrovic was recruited as head winemaker, though he departed in 2009 to be replaced by Richard Kershaw for both Mulderbosch and their sister winery, Kanu. I must confess, I was hoping for more, especially with respect to the Sauvignon Blanc that was surpassed by its peers.Importer: Cape Classics, New York, NY; tel. (212) 686-1300
