I have had some great Petite Sirahs from La Jota, but the ownership has changed and I am not sure this wine emerges from the same vineyard that produced some of those terrific wines of the early to mid nineties. Nevertheless, this is a competent effort. A deep ruby/purple color is followed by sweet aromas of licorice, black cherries, currants, and loamy soil. The 1998 Petite-Sirah (25% Viognier in the blend) has turned out well in this difficult vintage. Revealing a Rhone Valley-like character, it offers peppery, earthy, honeysuckle characteristics intermixed with black fruits and smoke.
