La Jota fashioned a magnificent 1991 Petite-Sirah from old vines on Howell Mountain. A spectacular wine, it is the equivalent of the dazzling Petite-Sirahs made by Ridge from their York Creek and Devil's Hill vineyards. An opaque black/purple color is followed by a spectacular nose of jammy cassis and minerals. The wine exhibits layers of sweet black-raspberry fruit, huge body, soft tannin, and a finish that must last for over a minute. There is remarkable purity and balance for a wine of this stature. Although young and unevolved, it makes for an impressive mouthful of Petite-Sirah. It should keep for at least two decades. Only 200 cases were made.
This small estate on Howell Mountain remains one of California's finest producers of world-class, complex red wine. This new release will require patience.
