Coming from sites spread throughout the Central Coast (hence the name), the 2014 On The Road (Grenache) is a ripe, sexy beauty that's loaded with classic Grenache notes of black cherries, licorice, smoked herbs and earth. This big, rich and nicely concentrated Grenache has more mid-palate depth and concentration than most and is a no-brainer purchase to enjoy over the coming 5-6 years.

Checking in as 100% Grenache, the 2013 On The Road (Grenache) was half destemmed and brought up in 65% new and 35% neutral French oak. It offers up a perfumed bouquet of kirsch and black raspberry fruits, crushed rocks, spice and dried earth in a full-bodied, supple, balanced and delicious style. It has a kick of savory tannin to integrate, but it's already approachable and should offer tons of pleasure over the coming 4-5 years.

Made from 100% Grenache and aged 16 months in 40% new French oak, the 2012 On The Road is a blockbuster-styled effort that stays lively, elegant and fresh. Loaded with peppery herbs, licorice, earth and darker berry fruit, it’s unabashedly California and has fantastic purity and richness. Enjoy this beauty over the coming 4-5 years. I loved these latest releases from winemaker Russell From. His 2011s are excellent in the vintage, with slightly toned down, elegant profiles that stay focused and tight on the palate. A voluptuous Grenache that over- delivers on texture and richness (especially given the vintage), the 2011 On the Road (100% Grenache aged 16 months in 50% new French oak) offers up sweet aromas and flavors of blackberry jam, raspberry, underbrush, licorice and hints of flowers. While a full-bodied, decadent effort, it has beautiful purity and is one of Russell’s more pure, elegant Grenaches. Enjoy it over the coming 4-5 years. Drink now-2018. His wines never lack for fruit or texture, yet to me, always stay beautifully balanced and downright thrilling to drink. At first, the 2010 On The Road is beautifully focused, with great purity and nuance. Sweet red cherries, roses, mint, anise and spices all come together nicely in this flashy, extroverted wine. Here, too, the alcohol is evident at times, but texturally the wine is quite beautiful. The 2010 is 100% Grenache aged in French oak barrels, 40% new. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016. Russell From’s wines are both inspiring and frustrating. They often boast impeccable textural elegance and purity, but at the same time the high alcohol (at times in excess of 16%) comes through, especially as the wines sit in the glass.
