The Tornatore 2019 Etna Rosso is a blend of Nerello Mascarello with a 5% touch of Nerello Cappuccio added to give a bit more color to the wine. In fact, "Nerello" is a diminutive of the word "nero" (or "black") and underlines the grape's light appearance. This entry-level wine is aged in oak for eight months to show dark cherry, spice and blue flower. Fruit comes from young vines that are 10 years old. This is an ample production of 80,000 bottles.

Made with a selection of fruit from the estate's younger vines, the 2018 Etna Rosso is thin and lean overall, with a bright bouquet focused on wild berry and cassis, plus a good amount of those volcanic overtones you should expect of any proud Etna Rosso. This bottle is a bit easier and more accessible in personality, making it a good entry-level choice, especially if paired with roast pork and a side of potatoes. This wine is 95% Nerello Mascalese and 5% Nerello Cappuccio aged in oak for a quick six months. An ample 90,000 bottles were released.

Opening to a mild garnet color and pretty ruby transparency, the Tornatore 2017 Etna Rosso has a bouquet that is tight and streamlined, with wild rose and forest fruit followed by crushed stone and tangy mountain herb. The blend is 95% Nerello Mascalese and 5% Nerello Cappuccio, and this 2017 vintage shows more grit and volume compared to past editions. That extra level of textural fiber would pair with porchetta or roast lamb. There's a salty note on the close. Production is in the neighborhood of 100,000 bottles.

Sporting a lean frame with a light ruby appearance, the Tornatore 2016 Etna Rosso is a fresh and immediate red wine from the mighty Sicilian volcano. The wine's texture is a bit too lean in places (this is a common characteristic of this vintage), so my recommendation is to drink this wine within the next 5 years or so. The wine is made with 95% Nerello Mascalese and 5% Nerello Cappuccio, aged in oak for six months. Some 100,000 bottles were made.

The 2015 Etna Rosso is mostly Nerello Mascalese and a smaller part Nerello Cappuccino from new vines. The wine is pale and light in appearance with a strong volcanic mineral vein that cuts through the back. You get delicate tones of wild berry, tar and anise seed at the edges. In the mouth, however, the presentation is streamlined and simple with nice length to keep the momentum going.
