Capafons-Osso’s latest releases include one wine from Montsant, the 2005 Masia Esplanes. It is a blend of 35% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Garnacha, with the balance Carinena and Syrah that was aged for 12 months in French oak. Opaque purple in color, it offers up an attractive nose of cedar, spice box, violets, black currant, and blackberry. Medium to full-bodied, chewy, and rich on the palate, this is a succulently-fruited effort that should evolve for 2-3 years and drink well through 2020. It is an excellent value. Rugged tannins reluctantly give way to roasted plum, coffee and earth flavors in this solid, rustic red. Has grip, but it's tough. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Garnacha and Cari?ena. Despite the hot year this shows encouraging depth, ripeness and a berry-driven nose. And if you cherish agility and subtleties more than pure power, this has the goods; it’s full of zesty plum and dark berry flavors and the finish is long and fresh. Notions of root vegetables, earth, old saddle leather, cherry fruit, herbs, and pepper emerge from this rustic 1999 that tastes like a Spanish Cotes du Rhone. Port-like prune characteristics also make an appearance as the wine sits in the glass. With good size, weight, and depth, it comes across as artisinal.
