Here's an oldie but a goodie: The 2016 Solare evokes a throwback winemaking style that prizes creaminess and softness. The blend is 80% Sangiovese and 20% Malvasia Nera, and 18 months of aging is ultimately what colors the flavor profile and substantial fruit weight offered here. It opens to perfumed black fruit, spice and baked blackberry tart. It's a nice ensemble but definitely on the full-bodied side of the Sangiovese spectrum. This is a 20,000-bottle production.

The Capannelle 2014 Solare is an especially polished and silky wine. From a cool and humid vintage, this 2014 fruit required more time to flesh out and take on volume in the bottle. Tasted now half a dozen years after the harvest, the wine shows a beautiful side with cassis, fresh berry, bitter almond and wild berry. The finish is smooth and subdued to a point of extreme silkiness.

This is an expansive and generous blend of Sangiovese and a smaller part Malvasia Nera from the Gaiole in Chianti subzone where wines tend to show a more wild or untamed personality. The 2013 Solare offers a distinctive bouquet that gives more prominence to savory tones of tobacco, cigar ash and Asian spice. There is plenty of primary fruit at its core, and it recalls dark plum or sun-dried cherry. This vintage shows extra focus and sharpness with spots of tannic astringency. It is poised to withstand a 10-year drinking window or longer.

From the Gaiole in Chianti comune, the 2011 Solare is a historic blend of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Malvasia Nera. The wine opens to a dark garnet color with pretty crimson highlights. The bouquet is slightly evolved with drying mineral tones followed by licorice, dried rose petal and candied cherry. The effect is delicate and graceful, and the mouthfeel shows a fleeting sense of weightlessness. This is a special wine with a tender heart.

Capannelle hits all the high marks with the 2010 Solare. This is among the best editions ever produced. I wouldn't say that the nose is pristine, because it is not. Instead, it offers lots of charm and character with dark fruit and spice that are nicely contrasted against one another. The finish reveals a crisp vein of acidity. Solar shows a bright and sunny personality that underlines its Tuscan charm.
