The 2005 Solare emerges from the glass with notable cut and precision in its dark, jammy fruit, minerals, violets, mint, rosemary, smoke and tar. The 2005 is a mid-weight Solare but the freshness, vibrancy and sheer purity of the fruit are a beauty to behold. Solare is 80% Sangiovese and 20% Malvasia Nera, a blend that works exceptionally well here. Today the wine comes across as quite young and in need of at least a few years in bottle, but its potential seems quite evident. This is the finest vintage of Solare I can recall, and that is saying something considering that 2005 was far from an easy vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025.
This is a fabulous set of new releases from Capannelle. Only the 2007 Chardonnay was disappointing, but then again, the hills of Chianti Classico aren’t exactly well suited to that grape.
