The Lagrein grape always offers inky and impenetrable density. The 2019 Alto Adige Lagrein Riserva Tor di Lupo shows opulent fruit with dried plum and prune. This is a heavy and sticky red wine that would best pair with succulent meats such as lamb or steak. There is a hint of bitter almond on the close. 6,000-bottle release.

The Cantina Andriano (Kellerei Andrian) 2018 Alto Adige Lagrein Riserva Tor di Lupo is inky dark and impenetrable in appearance. The wine shows thickness and weight, although the fruit aromas are downplayed in this vintage. You get blackberry preserves and dark plum delivered in a less specific swirl of darkness, with some mild earth and spice sprinkled throughout. The wine's strongest suit is its mouthfeel, which shows deep layering and nice texture. Some 15,000 bottles were made.

The 2017 Alto Adige Lagrein Riserva Tor di Lupo pours from the bottle with an inky and impenetrable appearance. That beautiful, velvety darkness follows to dark fruit aromas, black cherry, smoke, tar, smoke and sweet cedar. Lagrein often offers a tangy raw note that recalls cherry cough drop or medicinal herb. You will pick up a distant touch of that here. Otherwise, the richness of the fruit is well balanced against the integrated oak spice and toast. This vintage is especially ripe and fruit-forward. An ample 15,000 bottles were produced.

The 2016 Alto Adige Lagrein Riserva Tor di Lupo (with 18,000 bottles produced) is a thickly endowed and generous red wine that flaunts the richness and the dark fruit intensity that comes so naturally to this native grape found in the mountainous north of Italy. In terms of Lagrein, this is one of the best expressions I have yet tasted. There is a modern or contemporary side of the wine that is enhanced by oak, but the quality of the fruit shines through nonetheless. Dark cherry and plum are followed by spice, leather and cured tobacco.

My favorite Lagrein pairings include my family's roast whole chicken recipe with potatoes and onions. This native grape from Northern Italy is especially well matched to the bold, simple and genuine flavors of home cooking. Cantina Andriano has created an excellent expression in this warm vintage. The 2015 Alto Adige Lagrein Riserva Tor di Lupo is one of the best Lagrein-based wines on the market today. Dark cherry and black fruit rise with seamless and broad-reaching intensity. The tannins are soft and sweet. The wine fans far and wide over the palate. Some 18,000 bottles were made.
