The vineyard-designated 2014 Parcela No 5 is pure Tempranillo from a specific plot of vines planted in 1946 that are said to have a saline character. It matured in 60/40 American and French oak barrels for 14 months. It's balsamic and spicy, with a smoky/roasted twist but with less oak than in the past. On the palate, the notes of cigar ash and incense make a comeback, and the fruit shows contained ripeness. It has flavors of both kinds of wood. 13,181 bottles produced.

It showed a combination of dark chocolate and ripe cherries that made it quite attractive in a commercial way. Unfortunately, the palate starts showing an excess of oak that seems to be increasing with the price in other wines, and makes this one a little drying. 18,000 bottles.

The 2009 Parcela 5 is a clean, modern red, with a nicely perfumed nose mixing red fruit and spices. The palate reveals a good wine, easy to drink, with good balance and persistence and a slightly dry finish. Drink 2014-2016. I must admit I was a little puzzled by such a wide portfolio from Luis Alegre, which I didn’t know very well, and I was greatly surprised to find some superb wines, including one of my favorite oak-aged whites, and some others that I found excessively oaky and similar to each other. The 2007 Parcela No.5 is a 100% Tempranillo sourced from a parcel of 45-year-old vines and aged in combined new and used oak for 14 months. It has a dense bouquet of dark plum, kirsch and balsamic with well-integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins but is nicely balanced: chunky but with fine meaty black, spicy fruit on the finish. Drink now-2014.
