Polished and firm, this dense red offers espresso, loamy earth and smoke notes, shadowing a core of currant, licorice and tar flavors. Juicy, racy acidity balances the muscular tannins. The darker, more modern, ripe and concentrated 2015 III a. C has a very defined style for a segment of consumers that like that heady, oaky and hedonistic profile. This is a dark colored, unashamed modern Rioja with plenty of oak-related flavors and tannins that are going to require some time in bottle and/or powerful food. As with many wines of this profile, it's pure Tempranillo and the oak is French and mostly new. My experience is that this style usually ages faster than the more traditional wines.

Black cherry and currant flavors are ripe and rich in this dense red, backed by espresso, licorice and leather notes. Muscular tannins and balsamic acidity support the thick texture. The decadent 2011 III a.C. is a dark-colored, unashamed modern Rioja sold with a generic back label (outside the Crianza, Reserva, Gran Reserva hierarchy). It is Tempranillo with 2% each Graciano and Mazuelo from old vines matured for 15 months in brand new French oak barrels. It smells of ripe black cherries, peat, decayed violets and a mix of aromatic spices. The palate is lush, round and ripe, with some roasted flavors, ripe fruit and fine-grained tannins, accessible and with a good finish. Only 5,800 bottles were produced.
