The 2007 Las Colinas del Ebro Tinto Seleccion, a blend of 60% Merlot, 25% Syrah, and 15% Garnacha aged for 14 months in new French oak. Deep crimson-colored, it offers up a slightly roasted bouquet of Asian spices, mineral, espresso, blueberry, and black cherry. This is followed by a medium to full-bodied, savory wine with incipient complexity, ripe, layered flavors, and excellent length. It will likely evolve for 1-2 years but can be enjoyed now through 2017. The DO Terra Alta wines represent a new project for Bodegas Abanico. The 2006 Las Colinas del Ebro Tinto Seleccion is a blend of 60% Merlot, 25% Syrah, and 15% Garnacha aged for 14 months in new French oak. Opaque purple in color, it has a complex aromatic array of cedar, pencil lead, mineral, black currant, black cherry, and incense. With some elegance on the palate, it shows off spicy blue fruits, a good integration of oak and fruit, and a lengthy finish. Give it 2-3 years in bottle to round out and drink it from 2011 to 2020.
