The 2005 Offida Rosso Ludi (Montepulciano, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot) is an attractive red loaded with dark fruit, new leather, spices and sweet toasted oak. Made in a super-ripe, opulent style, the wine reveals plenty of depth and balance. With a little more persistence and finesse (especially in the tannins) this bottling might merit a higher score. There is plenty of potential here. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2013. These are the finest wines I have tasted from Velenosi, an emerging producer in the Marche that is very close to making a huge jump in the overall quality of their wines. Each bottle has a different look in terms of its label, and the estate could certainly consider a more consistent look for its packaging, which would make it easier for consumers and the trade to keep track of these wines. This is a dense and very ripe blend of Montepulciano, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with thick notes of syrupy fruit, cumin and clove. You can feel the heat here and this powerful wine delivers soft layers of black cherry and toasted hazelnut in the mouth.
