This wine has been fully mature for a number of years, yet it reveals no sign of drying out. The color is a deep garnet with some amber at the edge. The nose offers up roasted herbs, sweet black berry and currant fruit, along with earthy notes. This medium-bodied wine is somewhat compressed on the palate, but is true to the elegant, narrowly-built style of most 1981s. It will never resolve all of its tannin, so my advice is to drink it up. The wine has more fragrance than fruit, and appears to be increasingly spice and structural-driven as opposed to fruit-driven. Anticipated maturity: Now. Last tasted 5/97.
